 About The 'Rocks'

For many years, more privileged youth have had the avenue of competitive traveling baseball in which to focus their talents. Unfortunately, urban youth, especially those from lower-income families have never had the financial resources to participate in these advanced level leagues. In an effort to break the financial barriers that have stymied the athletic growth and success of our urban youth in Columbia, S.C., the Central City Shamrocks Traveling Baseball Club has been established. It's our turn!

The Central City Shamrocks Traveling Baseball Club is made up of talented 13-year old and younger baseball players, mostly from inner-city Columbia. The mission of our club is to introduce competitive, advanced level baseball to young ball players who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate at this level. The ball players will travel all over the Southeast, competing for local, state, and national AAU and USSSA Baseball Championships. Along the way, we will strive to teach our young men the concepts of self-worth, pride, leadership, responsibility, and discipline.

Our Name
When the idea to start a new traveling baseball squad was hatched, the founding coaches had no idea what to call the team. Many hours were spent brainstorming, researching, and bouncing names off of each other. The coaches knew that they wanted to bring something original to the traveling baseball arena. Having seen way too many team names prefixed with 'Carolina', 'Palmetto', 'Upstate', etc, they knew that they wanted to stay away from these and come up with something original. Also, since they intended to draw players from all over the region, rather than just from a small area, names such as 'Columbia', 'Dentsville', 'Blythewood', 'Lake Murray', etc, were not acceptable. The prefix, 'Central City' quickly became the most attractive option because of its uniqueness and because of its regional scope.

That was the easy part. Finding a mascot proved much more difficult. Again, the coaches saw too many of the same old mascots ('Tigers', 'Knights', 'Gators', etc.) The name 'Shamrocks' was suggested because many of the potential charter players lived in the Eau Claire part of town. After researching the name, it stuck. The Eau Claire area of Columbia is well known because of its diversity, strong sense of community, and because of its long, rich heritage. The name 'Shamrocks' is synonymous for the strength of this area and is one of the oldest mascot names used in South Carolina.

Thus, the name 'Central City Shamrocks' was chosen because of its uniqueness and because of its connection to one of South Carolina's oldest and proudest communities. That is why we are the Central City Shamrocks.
